The Velvet Underground were an American rock band formed in New York City in 1964 by Lou Reed and John Cale, with Sterling Morrison and Angus MacLise among the original members. The band became closely associated with Andy Warhol and the New York avant-garde scene during the 1960s. Their influential debut album, The Velvet Underground & Nico, was released in 1967 and featured the distinctive banana artwork designed by Warhol. Subsequent albums included White Light/White Heat, The Velvet Underground and Loaded. Their experimental approach to rock music helped shape the development of punk, alternative and independent rock.
